Engine Rebuild Services In Dublin

REBUILT PROPERLY, NOT PATCHED UP
Full and partial engine rebuilds carried out by experienced technicians, with every component measured against manufacturer tolerance before it goes back in. We tell you honestly whether the engine is worth saving, what the rebuild involves and what it costs, before anything is stripped.

When An Engine Is Worth Rebuilding, And When It Is Not

A rebuild is the right answer more often than people expect, and the wrong answer more often than some garages admit. A sound block with a failed head gasket is worth every cent of a rebuild. A high mileage engine with a scored bore, a damaged crank and a car worth less than the labor bill is not, and you deserve to hear that before the money is spent rather than after.

SmartAuto Garage assesses the engine first, gives you the realistic options side by side, and lets you decide. Rebuild, reconditioned unit, used engine or walk away. If a rebuild is not the sensible choice for your car, we will say so.

We rebuild petrol and diesel engines across all makes and light commercials, and we are VAG specialists for Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and SEAT.

Engine Rebuild Services We Carry Out

Full Engine Rebuild

The engine comes out, is stripped to the bare block and every component is measured. Anything outside tolerance is machined or replaced, then the engine is reassembled to specification with new gaskets, seals, bearings and fluids.

- Complete strip, clean and inspection
- Bores, crank, journals and clearances measured
- New bearings, seals, gaskets and timing components
- Reassembly to manufacturer torque and tolerance

Top End Rebuild And Cylinder Head Work

Where the damage is above the gasket face, a top end rebuilds costs a fraction of a full one. Heads are pressure tested before any work goes into them, because a cracked head is a waste of good parts.

- Cylinder head removal and pressure testing
- Skimming, valve seat and guide work
- Valve, spring and stem seal replacement
- Camshaft and follower inspection

Bottom End Rebuild

Knocking and rumbling under load usually means the bottom end, and that is bearing, crank or piston territory. It is the serious end of the job and the part most often skipped by a cheap repair.

- Main and big end bearing replacement
- Crankshaft inspection, grinding and regrind fitment
- Piston, ring and bore assessment
- Oil pump and pickup inspection

Head Gasket Failure Repair

The most common reason engines come to us. A blown gasket is repairable, but the block and head both have to be checked for warping and cracking first, otherwise the new gasket fails the same way within months.

- Head gasket replacement with head skim
- Block face and head flatness checked
- Coolant system pressure testing
- Combustion leak testing before and after

Timing Belt Failure Damage

When a belt snaps on an interference engine, valves meet pistons and the damage is immediate. Rebuilding after a belt failure is routine work here. If yours has not failed yet and the interval is due, our timing belt and chain service is the far cheaper conversation.

- Bent valve and damaged piston assessment
- Cylinder head rebuild or replacement
- Bore and piston crown inspection
- Full timing system replaced on reassembly

Oil Starvation And Bearing Damage

Low oil, a failed pump, a blocked pickup or a missed service. The damage shows up in the bearings first and the crank shortly after, and it gets worse every mile the engine runs.

- Bearing and journal damage assessment
- Oil pump, pickup and gallery cleaning
- Crank regrind and oversize bearing fitment
- Oil pressure testing after rebuild

Symptoms That Point To Serious Engine Damage

An engine rarely fails without warning. The difference between a repair and a rebuild is usually how many miles were driven after the first sign.
01

Knocking Or Rumbling That Rises With Revs

A deep knock from the bottom of the engine means bearings. Every mile driven on it turns a bearing job into a crank job.

02

Blue Smoke From The Exhaust

Oil burning in the combustion chamber. Usually worn rings, bores or valve stem seals, and it gets steadily worse rather than better.

03

White Smoke And Disappearing Coolant

Coolant entering the cylinders, which normally points at a head gasket, a warped head or a crack. Sweet smelling exhaust is the giveaway.

04

Mayonnaise Under The Oil Cap

Coolant mixing with oil. On a short journey car, it can be condensation, but combined with coolant loss or overheating it is a head gasket until proven otherwise.

05

Crunching Or Refusing To Go Into Gear

The clutch is not fully releasing, so the gearbox is being asked to select against a turning input shaft. Often hydraulic, sometimes the clutch itself, and hard on the synchros either way.

06

Losing Oil With No Visible Leak

If the driveway is clean and the level still drops, the engine is burning it. Worth investigating before the oil light appears, because by then the damage has usually started.
07

The Engine Overheated Or Cut Out And Will Not Restart

Stop driving and get it recovered. The difference between a head gasket and a rebuild is often the last two kilometres.

How An Engine Rebuild Works, Stage By Stage

Stage 01

Assessment And Diagnosis
Compression and leak down testing, oil inspection, a scan and a physical check before anything is lifted. Our car diagnostics service establishes whether the fault really is internal, because more than a few suspected rebuilds turn out to be something far cheaper.

Stage 02

Removal, Strip And Measure
The engine comes out and is stripped to components. Everything is cleaned and measured, and only then is the true extent of the damage known.

Stage 03

Quote And Your Approval
You get a firm price once the engine is measured, broken down into machining, parts and labour, with the alternatives priced alongside it. Nothing is ordered until you approve it.

Stage 04

Machining, Rebuild And Refit
Machining is completed, the engine is assembled to specification with new gaskets, seals and timing components, then refitted and commissioned.

Engine Rebuild FAQs

Need a quick answer about your vehicle? Call the garage and speak directly with the team.
How much does an engine rebuild cost?
It depends on the engine, the extent of the damage and how much machining is needed, and no honest garage can price it accurately before stripping the engine. CONFIRM: state your assessment fee and a typical price range for common engines.
Sometimes, not always. A reconditioned unit can be quicker and cheaper up front, while a rebuild keeps your original engine in the car. We price both so you can compare them properly.
A top end rebuild is measured in days, a full rebuild usually in weeks once machining and parts are factored in. CONFIRM: give your typical turnaround for a top end and a full rebuild.
A properly rebuilt engine is built back to the same tolerances as new, with new bearings, seals, gaskets and timing components. Treated well and run in correctly, it will give you years of service.
Yes, and it is routine work. Valve and piston damage is assessed first so you know what the rebuild involves before committing.
