Every engine is controlled by software that decides fueling, boost, ignition timing and how much torque the car is allowed to make at any moment. A remap rewrites those calibration tables. Nothing mechanical changes, which is exactly why the work needs care, because the same software that unlocks performance can also ask components for more than they were built to give.
The gains available vary enormously by engine. A modern turbo diesel or turbo petrol usually has real headroom. A naturally aspirated engine has very little, and any tuner promising a transformation from software alone on one of those is selling you something. We give you a realistic figure for your specific engine and variant before you commit to anything.

Where hardware has already been changed, the software has to be written around it rather than applied on top of it. A downpipe, intercooler or intake changes the conditions the ECU is calibrating for.
