Clutch And Flywheel Replacement

THE LABOUR IS THE BILL. DO IT ONCE.
Clutch, dual mass flywheel and slave cylinder replacement carried out together, because the expensive part of this job is getting the gearbox out. We inspect before we quote, show you what has actually worn, and replace the whole assembly so the gearbox comes out once rather than twice.

Why A Clutch Job Is Really A Labour Job

Almost all of what you pay for a clutch is the work of separating the engine and gearbox, supporting both, and putting the car back together. The friction plate itself is one of the cheaper parts in the box. That single fact should decide how the job is done.

A clutch fitted on its own, with a tired dual mass flywheel and an original release bearing left in place, is the most expensive saving in motoring. When the flywheel starts juddering eight months later, the gearbox comes out again and you pay the entire labour bill for a second time.

Clutch And Flywheel Services We Carry Out

Clutch Replacement

The full kit rather than the friction plate alone. Pressure plate, driven plate and release bearing are replaced together, with the spline and input shaft checked and greased correctly on reassembly.

- Complete clutch kit replacement
- Release bearing and fork inspection
- Input shaft, spline and seal checks
- Clutch pedal travel and adjustment set up

Dual Mass Flywheel Replacement

A dual mass flywheel has springs and a damper inside it, and it wears like any other moving part. It cannot be machined or skimmed back to health, so once free play or heat damage is outside limits it has to be replaced.

- Free play, rock and heat damage measurement
- Manufacturer specification replacement units
- Ring gear and starter engagement inspection
- Correct torque and angle on flywheel bolts

Solid Flywheel Conversion

For some vehicles a solid flywheel conversion is a sensible and longer lasting option, particularly on high mileage and hard working cars. It is not right for every model, and we will tell you which category yours falls into.

- Suitability assessment for your engine and gearbox
- Conversion kit supply and fitment
- Honest explanation of the noise and vibration trade off
- Priced alongside the dual mass option

Concentric Slave Cylinder Replacement

On many modern cars the slave cylinder sits inside the bellhousing. If it fails after a clutch job, the gearbox comes out again for a part that costs very little, which is why it is replaced as standard here.

- Concentric slave cylinder replaced with the clutch
- Hydraulic line and connector inspection
- System bleeding and pedal feel testing
- Leak check under load before handover

Clutch Hydraulics, Master And Slave Cylinders

Not every clutch problem is the clutch. A pedal that sinks, feels spongy or will not select gear is often hydraulic, and that is a far smaller job than a replacement.

- Master and slave cylinder testing and replacement
- Hydraulic fluid and line replacement
- Air ingress and bleeding faults
- Pedal assembly and linkage repair

Clutch Judder And Bite Point Diagnosis

Judder, a rising bite point and slipping under load all have different causes, and some of them are not the clutch at all. Our car diagnostics service rules out engine and gearbox faults before anything is stripped.

- Road test under load and on hills
- Slip testing and bite point assessment
- Engine, mount and gearbox fault exclusion
- Clear explanation before any quote

Symptoms Of A Failing Clutch Or Flywheel

Clutch faults announce themselves gradually, which is why so many people only book in once it will barely pull away. Recognising them early keeps the job smaller.
01

The Revs Rise But The Car Does Not

Classic slip. Most obvious in a high gear up a hill or under hard acceleration. The friction material is no longer holding, and every journey from here wears the flywheel face as well.

02

The Bite Point Has Crept Towards The Top

A bite point that has moved upward over a few months is a clutch wearing out. It is the earliest reliable warning you get and the best time to book.

03

Judder Or Shudder When Pulling Away

A shake through the car as the clutch engages usually points at the flywheel rather than the plate, particularly on a dual mass unit. It can also be contamination from an oil leak.

04

Rattle At Idle That Stops When You Press The Clutch

A dead giveaway for a worn dual mass flywheel. The springs inside it have gone slack, and the noise disappears the moment the pedal takes the load off them.

05

Crunching Or Refusing To Go Into Gear

The clutch is not fully releasing, so the gearbox is being asked to select against a turning input shaft. Often hydraulic, sometimes the clutch itself, and hard on the synchros either way.

06

The Pedal Goes To The Floor Or Feels Spongy

Almost always hydraulic. A leaking master or slave cylinder, or air in the system. Stop driving it, because losing clutch operation in traffic is not a small problem.

How A Clutch Replacement Works, Stage By Stage

Stage 01

Road Test And Diagnosis
We drive the car and test the clutch under load before touching anything, because slip, judder and selection problems have different causes and some of them are cheaper than a clutch.

Stage 02

Gearbox Out And Inspection
The gearbox comes out and the assembly is inspected properly. Flywheel measured, plate thickness checked, bearing, seals and bellhousing examined for oil contamination.

Stage 03

Quote Confirmation And Your Approval
The quote is confirmed against what has actually been found. If a component is still within specification we tell you and it stays. Nothing extra is fitted without your say so.

Stage 04

Fit, Refill And Bed In
New assembly fitted to torque, gearbox oil replaced, hydraulics bled and the car road tested. You get the bedding in advice at handover, because the first few hundred kilometres set how the clutch behaves for the rest of its life.

Clutch And Flywheel FAQs

Need a quick answer about your vehicle? Call the garage and speak directly with the team.
How much does a clutch replacement cost?
It depends on the vehicle, how much of the assembly needs replacing and whether the gearbox comes out from above or below. CONFIRM: state your typical price range and what the quote includes.
Most cars are a same day or next day job once the parts are in. Awkward layouts and four wheel drive vehicles take longer. CONFIRM: give your typical turnaround.
Only if it measures outside specification, and we check rather than assume. On dual mass units that have covered high mileage the answer is usually yes, because a worn flywheel will destroy a new clutch.
No. A solid flywheel can sometimes be machined within limits, but a dual mass unit is a sealed assembly and is replaced rather than resurfaced.
On the right vehicle it is cheaper and longer lasting. The trade off is more vibration and gear rattle in the cabin, and it does not suit every engine and gearbox. We will tell you which applies to yours.
