Car Diagnostics And Fault Finding In Dublin

A CODE IS A CLUE. NOT AN ANSWER.
Proper fault finding on dealer level equipment, backed by live data, circuit testing and a road test where the fault needs one. We tell you what has actually failed, what it will cost to put right, and what can safely wait. No parts are fitted to find out.

Reading A Code And Finding A Fault Are Two Different Jobs

A scanner pulls a fault code out of a control module. That code names a circuit and a symptom, nothing more. P0171 does not mean a faulty sensor, it means the engine is running lean, and the cause might be a split hose, a tired pump, a leaking gasket or a sensor that is reporting perfectly well about a real problem somewhere else.

That gap between the code and the cause is where money disappears. Fitting the part, the code appears to name clears the light for a fortnight, then it returns and the bill starts again. We treat the scan as the first five minutes of the job rather than the whole of it, and nothing is replaced here until a test has proved it faulty.

We diagnose all makes and models, cars and light commercials, and we are VAG specialists for Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and SEAT.

Diagnostic And Fault Finding Services We Carry Out

Full Vehicle System Scan

Modern cars carry dozens of control modules and a generic scanner reads only a handful. A full scan interrogates every module on the car, so a fault stored in the gearbox, ABS or body control unit is not missed because the reader stopped at the engine.

- All module fault code read and report
- Manufacturer specific codes, not generic equivalents
- Stored, pending and historic fault data
- Freeze frame data showing conditions when the fault occurred

Engine Management Light Diagnosis

The single most common reason drivers book a diagnostic. The light means a monitored system has fallen outside its limits, and the job is to work out which and why before it damages something expensive.

- Engine management and emissions fault investigation
- Misfire, fueling and ignition faults
- Turbo, boost and air leak testing
- Limp mode and power loss diagnosis

Live Data And Road Test Diagnostics

Plenty of faults look perfect at idle on a ramp. Live data recorded while the car is driven shows what the sensors report under load, under braking and at temperature, which is where most real faults reveal themselves.

- Live sensor data recorded under load
- Fault reproduced on the road rather than described
- Actuator testing and component activation
- Before and after comparison once repaired

Intermittent And Hard To Find Faults

The faults other workshops give up on. Something that only happens when it rains, only when cold, only after forty minutes or only over a particular bump. These take patience and method rather than a bigger scanner.

- Fault logging over extended periods
- Circuit, voltage drop and earth testing
- Wiring and connector inspection under movement
- Parasitic battery drain investigation

Emissions, DPF And EGR Fault Finding

Emissions faults rarely announce themselves until the car drops into limp mode. Finding the cause matters, because a blocked filter is often a symptom of something upstream. Repairs are handled in the same workshop by our DPF and AdBlue service.

- DPF blockage and regeneration failure diagnosis
- EGR, lambda and MAF sensor testing
- AdBlue system fault investigation
- Exhaust and catalytic converter testing

Electrical And Wiring Fault Tracing

Where a diagnosis lands on a circuit rather than a component, it moves straight into fault tracing. Our auto electrical repairs service covers the repair side, from wiring and earths to control module coding.

- Circuit and continuity testing
- Corroded connector and earth fault tracing
- Charging, starting and battery drain faults
- Control module communication faults

Warning Lights And What They Usually Mean

Colour tells you urgency. Amber means get it looked at soon, red means stop safely and do not keep driving.
01

Engine Management Light

Steady amber means a fault is stored and the car is still drivable in most cases. Flashing means a misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter, and that one needs the engine switched off.

02

ABS Warning Light

Your normal brakes still work, but anti-lock braking and often stability control are disabled. Usually a wheel speed sensor, a damaged reluctor ring or wiring at the hub.

03

Airbag Warning Light

The airbag system has faulted and may not deploy. Frequently caused by a connector under a seat that has been disturbed, which is a cheap repair once it is found.

04

Battery Or Charging Light

Not a battery warning, a charging warning. The alternator, regulator or belt is not keeping up, and the car is running on stored power with a limited time before it stops.

05

Coolant Temperature Warning

Red for a reason. Overheating damage happens in minutes, so pull over, switch off and let it cool rather than pressing on to the next exit.

06

Oil Pressure Warning

The most serious light on the dash. Stop immediately. Driving even a short distance without oil pressure can destroy an engine.
07

DPF Light

The filter needs to regenerate and cannot, usually because of short stop and start journeys. Acting early often means a drive cycle rather than a replacement filter.

How A Diagnostic Session Works, Stage By Stage

Stage 01

Describe The Symptom
Call, WhatsApp or email with the make, model and what the car is doing. When it happens matters as much as what happens. Cold, hot, wet, braking, turning, over bumps, only after a long run.

Stage 02

Scan And Inspect
A full multi module scan plus a physical inspection on the ramp. Codes, freeze frame data and fault history are read together, because the order faults were stored in often points straight at the cause.

Stage 03

Test And Confirm
Live data, circuit testing and a road test where the fault needs one. This is the part that separates a diagnosis from a guess, and it is where the diagnostic hour is actually spent.

Stage 04

Report, Quote And Your Approval
You get a plain explanation of what has failed, what fixing it involves and what it costs in parts and labour. Nothing is ordered and no repair starts until you say yes.

How much does a car diagnostic cost?
Diagnostics are charged by time rather than by fault, because reading a straightforward code takes minutes while an intermittent wiring fault can take hours. CONFIRM: state your diagnostic rate and what it includes.
No. A code read tells you which circuit reported a problem. A diagnostic tells you why, which is the part that determines what you actually need to buy.
Many faults are identified within the hour. Intermittent faults, battery drains and wiring problems take longer because the fault has to be reproduced before it can be traced.
Yes, and a lot of our work is exactly that. Noises, vibration, poor economy and handling faults never store a code and are found by inspection and road test instead.
Usually yes. The fault is still stored in memory, and a light that clears itself normally means an intermittent fault that will return, often at a worse moment.
